When a flower seed grows at the heart of a flower (think of a sunflower) it grows into the best space available for it. This forms rather wonderful spirals. What fraction of a turn each time gives the best packing? Some examples above! Can you spot the MOST IRRATIONAL NUMBER in there somewhere?
